CATHOLIC HOLY RELICS
Stephen's mummified hand is to be respected throughout the country. During World War II, the Holy Right Hand was concealed – similarly to the coronation jewels – near Salzburg, in Austria. The relic arrived back to Hungary in 1945, and it has been on display in Saint Stephen's Basilica in Budapest since 1987.
Good King Stephen was anointed king of Hungary in the year A.D. 1000 by Pope Sylvester II, who presented him with a cross and a crown. Stephen was a Christian who devoted much of his reign to the promotion of the Christian faith. He gave much of his wealth to the Church, helped to build churches, and defended the rights of the Holy See against pagan usurpation. He was canonized by Pope Gregory VII in 1083, and became the patron saint of Hungary. His memorial is celebrated by the worldwide Church on Aug. 16.
